Mercy Place Lathlain volunteer Ella Scott has been running music therapy session for residents at the home for over three years.
Ella says the melodic sounds of the harp have a profound effect on the seniors, many of whom are living with dementia.
On the eve of International Day of Happiness, a United Nations-led global celebration, Ella says her weekly music therapy sessions also bring joy and happiness to residents as soon as she begins to play.
“I am always careful to watch residents’ body language, as several of the residents are non-verbal. It is incredibly rewarding to watch them gently relax as they listen to the music and experience the vibration of the strings,” says Ella.
Ella says she fell into volunteering at Mercy Place Lathlain after regularly visiting a friend at the home.
“These days, I have the pleasure of playing the harp every week to the residents,” she says. “It is such a soothing and calming instrument. Everyone seems to enjoy hearing the notes drift along the corridors. The instrument lifts the atmosphere and brings joy not only to residents but also to the staff as well.”
Mercy Place Lathlain Service Manager Pammy Singh says Ella’s weekly visits are a highlight for everyone at the home and bring happiness and comfort to residents.
“International Day of Happiness reminds us of the importance of injecting joy and laughter into our daily lives and and our team at Lathlain is focused on supporting the emotional wellbeing of our residents as well as their physical care needs,” says Pammy.
“We are incredibly grateful to our Ella who has built up strong connections with many of our residents over the years. Their faces really do light up when they see her, and for many residents, Ella’s visits are a real highlight of their week.”
