Mercy Hospital for Women midwife wins state title

Mercy Hospital for Women midwife Robyn Smith has been named JOHNSON’S® Mums’ Midwife of the Year for Victoria.

Robyn works in Maternity Group Practice (MGP), caring for women with low-risk pregnancies. MGP midwives work in pairs to care for women during their pregnancy and labour, and provide home visits up to two weeks after the baby’s birth. If a woman’s pregnancy becomes high risk, MGP midwives continue their care in consultation with the obstetric team.

Robyn was nominated for the award by many families. One mother said: “Robyn empowered and educated me, making me confident to voice my needs, feelings and plans. I look forward to the day I can tell my daughter about the strong, clever and inspirational woman who helped her come into this world.”

Robyn has been working at Mercy Hospital for Women for the past eight and a half years and said it was an incredible honour to be recognised for her work.

“Every midwife works hard to help empower women to take ownership of their pregnancy and baby’s birth; and it’s not something you expect to get an award for,” Robyn said.

“One of the perks of my job is that when women come back for subsequent births it is incredibly special as you are a part of every pregnancy and birth experience for that family.”

Robyn was presented with her award during a celebration at Mercy Hospital for Women to mark International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day. each year.
